Planning for Post-Secondary Starts Earlier Than You Think

For many students and families, post-secondary planning can feel like something to think about in Grade 12—but in reality, successful planning often starts much earlier.

Michelle Robertson of Together Counselling and Educational Guidance spoke at our April 23, 2026 DPAC General Meeting offering valuable guidance for students and parents navigating high school graduation requirements, course planning, and the many pathways available after graduation.

Graduation Requirements vs. Post-Secondary Admission

One of the biggest takeaways is that earning a BC Dogwood Diploma does not automatically mean a student meets admission requirements for every college, university, or training program.

Different schools and programs often have their own prerequisites, which may include:

  • Specific Grade 11 or 12 courses

  • Minimum grades in key subjects

  • Supplemental applications or portfolios

This means students should research their desired programs early to ensure they are taking the right courses and meeting all requirements.

Why Grades 10, 11, and 12 All Matter

Course planning is not just a Grade 12 concern. Decisions made in Grades 10 and 11 can significantly impact future options.

Students are encouraged to:

  • Plan courses carefully each year

  • Keep multiple pathways open when possible

  • Understand how current choices affect future opportunities

Thoughtful planning can reduce stress later and help students stay on track for their goals.

There Are Many Paths After High School

Post-secondary success does not look the same for everyone. University is just one option among many.

Students may choose:

  • Universities

  • Colleges

  • Trades and apprenticeships

  • Technical programs

  • Gap years or alternative pathways

The key is finding the best fit based on interests, strengths, and career goals.

Explore Before You Decide

Students do not need to have everything figured out immediately—but they do benefit from exploring early.

Helpful strategies include:

  • Attending information sessions

  • Researching schools and programs

  • Meeting with school counselors

  • Reviewing admission timelines and deadlines

The more students explore, the more confident and informed their decisions can be.

Start Early, Stay Informed

Post-secondary planning is about more than graduation—it is about preparing for what comes next. By researching requirements early, planning courses carefully, exploring options, and staying aware of deadlines, students can set themselves up for a smoother transition after high school.
